Rodney L. Bankert April 3, 1947 - January 11, 2017 Spring Grove Rodney L. Bankert, 69, passed away with his family by his side on January 11, 2017 at York Hospital. He was the loving husband of Debra D. (Deardorff) Bankert, together they shared over 23 years of marriage. Rodney was born at home in York New Salem on April 3, 1947 and was the son of the late William E. and Norma J. (Smith) (Bankert) Markel. He graduated from Spring Grove High School class of 1966. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the VietNam War and was honorably discharged. He worked as an electrician for LWB Refractory for over 30 years and retired in 2009. He was a past commander and life member of Spring Grove VFW Post 5265. He was a former football coach for the Spring Grove Rockets and Spring Grove Middle School. He was a member of the Viking Athletic Assoc., Prince Athletic Assoc., Shiloh American Legion and the Monday Night Golf League at Hickory Heights Golf Course and the Magniseta (Bakers) Golf League at Briarwood. In addition to golf, he enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing and the Baltimore Orioles. In addition to his wife, Debra, he is survived by his son, Justin L. Bankert and wife, Tara of Woodbridge VA; his daughter Jennifer M. Hunt and husband, Glynn of Warrington, PA; and his grandchildren, Oliver, Owen, Eden, Madelyn and Reed. He is also survived by his brother, Willian E. Bankert Jr. and wife, Jane of Spring Grove; his sisters, Connie Lauchman and husband, Ed of Spring Grove and Sharon Wentz and husband, Rodney of York; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service in celebration of his life will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service Inc., 175 N. Main St., Spring Grove, with the Rev. Larry McConnell officiating. He will be laid to rest following the service at St. Jacobs Union Cemetery in York New Salem with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Viewings will be held on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
