Winfield, Robert Allan 11/16/1945 - 10/14/2016 Ann Arbor Dr. Robert (Bob) Winfield passed away on Friday, October 14, 2016, surrounded by family at his home in Ann Arbor, MI. Born in Winnetka, IL, Bob came to Ann Arbor to attend the University of Michigan in 1964 and graduated from UM Medical School in 1972. Subsequently, he joined the University Health Service (UHS) in 1981 as a staff physician and became the medical director in 1982. He served in that capacity until 1999 when he became the Executive Director of UHS, where he devoted his career to the wellbeing of students, faculty, and staff. His gentle bedside manner impacted thousands of patients at UHS over the years. He served as director of the University Health Service, Chief Health Officer, and medical director for MHealthy at the University of Michigan until his death. He was a caring and compassionate physician, a thoughtful leader, and a mentor to many. Forever a teacher, Bob's penchant for learning was matched only by his commitment to helping others. Bob was known for his kindness, generosity, integrity, and unwavering commitment to his family and friends. His advice and guidance were unparalleled, as were his enthusiasm for bowties and passion for sailing. He lived life fully and with purpose, inspiring others to do the same. He was predeceased by his wife, Lynn Chandler, and his parents, Victor E. Winfield and Evalyn J. Winfield. He will be deeply missed by his children, Julia Winfield and Daniel Winfield; dear friend, Eleanor Barron; sister, Marilyn (Ed) Winfield; cousin, Steve (Bobbie) Jacobs; sisters-in-law, Lauren (Jon) Costello and Carol (Andrew) Marks; and nieces and nephew, Sharon Laudadio, Amanda Marks, and Sean Costello. Visitation with the family will take place at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, 525 S State St, Ann Arbor, Michigan on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 from 4:30 to 8 PM. Funeral services begin at 10 am on Wednesday, October 19 at Nie Funeral Home, Liberty Chapel, 3767 W. Liberty Road, Ann Arbor, with interment following at Forest Hill Cemetery Memorial. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center ( mcancer.org/giving ) or the Jewish Federation of Greater Ann Arbor ( jewishannarbor.org ). Donations to the UM Cancer Center will be allocated to the Leukemia Research Fund.
