Born June 8, 1942, Robert "Bob" Sumner, 74, St. Augustine, passed away peacefully on Oct. 17, 2016, at the Bailey Family Center for Caring with his family by his side. He was born in New York City, son of Frederick Sumner and Violet May Sumner. He lived in Paterson, New Jersey, and Warwick, New York, before he retired to St. Augustine in 1999. He retired from Con Edison, having worked there 21 years until his retirement. Even in his retirement years, Bob worked many jobs and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 2391, St. Augustine. He enjoyed participating in volunteer events held by different organizations, V.F.W, Elks, and AmVets. He enjoyed playing cards and working events, especially those that would benefit children in the community. Bob was a man of few words, but he was a hard-working good man. Bob is predeceased by his parents, his brother, Frederick, and by his beloved wife of 45 years Elizabeth "Betty." Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He is survived by two daughters, June Moran (Darren), St. Augustine, Karen Brandt (Stephen), Fairlawn, New Jersey, and three sons, Scott, Chester, New York, Thomas, Paterson, New Jersey, and James (Jenny), Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He also leaves six grandchildren "pups", Robert, Michelle, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Mackenzie, and Peter. He will be sorely missed by his nieces, Catherine Gallagher, and Dorothy Hesson (Bob) and the families of Jim, Matt, and Kevin of St. Augustine. Flowers are gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida or Comunita Cenacolo is appreciated. A visitation will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at St. Johns Family Funeral Home with prayers following. A celebration of Bob's life will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the V.F.W. Post 2391, 6184 US 1 South, St. Augustine. St. Johns Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
