Robert Clinton Shay, 65, died Monday April 17, 2017. Rob was born on February 25, 1952 in Summit, NJ to George Clinton and Lucille Nordenholt Shay. He was raised in Corning, NY until he moved to Winston-Salem in 1971. Rob established the original West End Café in 1980 and later expanded to its current location where he enjoyed joint ownership until his retirement in 2016. During these years he also co-owned and operated the former Cat's Corner and Southbound Bistro. Rob was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He saw the best in people and was quick to help a stranger. His sense of humor and quick wit were always sure to make you smile. Active in his community, Rob helped organize the March of Dimes Chili Cook-off for many years. He was instrumental in the revitalization of downtown Winston-Salem and was also a member of the Restaurant Association. He was preceded in death by his mother and his sister Deborah Shay Downey. Surviving are his wife Suzanne Purvis Shay of the home, son Michael Robert Shay (Kasi) of Winston-Salem, grandchildren Carter Michael Shay, and Emma Rose Shay, father G. Clinton Shay of Hardy, VA, brother Stephen B. Shay, sister Lucinda S. Justice, and numerous nieces and nephews. Come join family and friends to celebrate Rob's life at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday April 30, 2017 at 3852 Mindona Dr., Winston-Salem, NC 27106. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Crisis Control Ministry, 200 E. 10th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
