WOODSON - Robert John Martin, 94, of Woodson, passed away Monday morning, Oct. 17, 2016, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born Aug. 31, 1922, in Philadelphia, the son of Thornton Henry and Una Maud Kelly Martin. He married Bonnita Lawson Johnson on Nov. 1, 1974, in Jerseyville, and she survives. He is also survived by nine children; Robert J. (wife, Rebecca) Martin, Jr. of Columbia, Maryland, Lynn (husband, Michael) Neff of Alexandria, Virginia, Craig (wife, Christi) Martin of Westminster, Colorado, Beth (husband, Andy) Gilbert of Columbus, Georgia, Deborah (husband, Joe) Fanning of Manchester, Tim (wife, Gemma) Johnson of Downers Grove, Kyle (wife, Tracy) Johnson of Jemison, Alabama, Darrell (wife, Peggy) Johnson of Waverly, and Vance (wife, Erin) Martin of Mahomet; 20 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; one sister, Muriel Briggs of Richboro, Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Martin served in the United States Army during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge with the 106th Infantry. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh after returning home from the war. He retired from AFLAC. Following retirement he was a substitute teacher in area school districts until the age of 82. He was a member of the Manchester Baptist Church and the Manchester American Legion. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Manchester Baptist Church with burial at Manchester Cemetery. The family will meet friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Memorials are suggested to the Manchester Baptist Church or Manchester Cemetery.
