Robert H. Johnson
Robert H. Johnson, 60, of Thomson, Ga., passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 4, 2016 due to complications of pneumonia. A Monroe native, he was an outstanding son and father, coach, teacher and mentor, and best brother anyone could hope for. An avid athlete and outdoorsman, the basketball teams he coached achieved much success. The son of Hugh C. and Beatrice Johnson, Rob was born Oct. 27, 1955 in Monroe. A 1973 graduate of Monroe High, he played basketball there as well as Monroe County Community College. Rob received a basketball scholarship to Augusta State University, Augusta, Ga., where he earned undergraduate and master's degrees. He lived most of his adult life in the Augusta area. An assistant basketball coach at Augusta State, Rob later taught at Butler High School where he was head basketball coach over 20 years, later serving several years as a principal at Hephzibah High before retiring. Preceded in death by his father, left to cherish happy memories are Rob's son, Robert H. "Robbie " Johnson Jr., of Augusta; mother, Beatrice Johnson of Monroe; brothers, David (Annette) Johnson, Rick, and Don Johnson; sisters, Mary (Jim) Howe and Lynn (Mark) Grummon; stepchildren, Justin Chandler, Jonathan Chandler, Anne Marie Keith, Melanie Viebrock, and Katie Morris; and fiancée Glennys Gonzalez, as well as many adoring nieces and nephews. Whenever Uncle Rob was around, we knew there would be laughter and fun. Rob left us suddenly and far too soon and will be missed dearly. A memorial gathering was held in Georgia and a private family service will be held in Monroe at a future date.
