Robert Lafayette Hayes Sr.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 at Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Chapel for Robert Lafayette "Short Arms" Hayes Sr., 70, of Hokes Bluff. Mr. Hayes passed away Feb. 14, 2017. The Rev. Floyd Watkins and Pastor Bruce Gilliland will officiate. Burial will follow at New Bethel Cemetery. Glencoe-Hokes Bluff Funeral Home & Cemetery is in charge of the services. Robert was a member of New Bethel FCM Church. He was a 1965 graduate of Hokes Bluff High School. He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 35 years and retired. Robert was active in the USW Local 12 and held multiple positions including policy committee, vice division chairman and division chairman of the radial plant. Robert was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed deer hunting and took several trips to hunt in North Dakota, Texas and Colorado. He is preceded in death by his parents, E.L. and Sarah Hayes; brothers, Ernie, Sheriff James, Sammy, Jerry Wayne, Johnny Dale and Stanley Carl Hayes; sister, Camillia Hayes; nephews, Jacob and Sammy Dale Hayes; brother-in-law, John Bussey; sisters-in-law, Irene Hayes and Delores West; father and mother-in-law; Brown and Gwendolyne Hill. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Diane Hill Hayes; son and son's girlfriend Robert Jr. and Angela Geer; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Noel Johnson; grandson, Clay Johnson; brothers, Don Hayes, Alan and Betty Hayes, David and Valerie Hayes and Johnny and Donna Hayes; sisters, Janis Bussey, Mary Green, Deborah and Ronald Rochester, Lynn and Gary Williams; sister-in-law, Diane Duncan Hayes; aunts, Margaret Hubbard and Martha "Mott" (Vinyard) Williams, a number of nieces and nephews, a special little friend, Sarah Connell (Smiley) and a multitude of friends. Pallbearers will be George Wright, Tim Lavender, Larry Sandlin, W. C. McCullars, Wayne Oliver, Pat Mayhall, Will Posey and Kevin Pierce. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Condray, Jamie Stargell, late Samuel Doster "Doc" Griffith III, late Jacob Hayes and Jack's Morning Coffee Club. Special thanks to George Wright, caregivers; Brandi Vance, Randi Green and Amedisys staff and Hokes Bluff 1st Responders. Family will receive flowers or memorials may be made for Parkinson's Disease Research. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of service Friday at the Funeral Home.
