Robert B. Christie Sr.
Robert Burke Christie, Sr., known to all as Bob, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 13, 2017 with his wife and oldest son by his side. He was born on September 8, 1928 in Brockton, Mass. to the late William E. Christie, Sr. and Helen Burke Christie. Bob was a lifelong resident of Rockland. He enjoyed a tight-knit group of friends, many of whom he had known since childhood. Bob graduated with honors from Rockland High School in 1946 where he was recognized for both his scholastic and athletic accomplishments. He loved basketball and in 1946 was both a starter on the Rockland High School Eastern Massachusetts Championship Team and was selected as a member of the Boston Globe All Tournament Team. During that same year, he was also the starting quarterback on the Rockland High School football team. After graduation, Bob served his country as a member of the U.S Army achieving the rank of Sargent before his discharge in 1948. Upon his return to Rockland, he attended Boston College graduating with honors in 1952. Following graduation, he became the owner and operator of Rockland Motors where he remained in business for the next 48 years until his retirement in 2000. For 34 of those years, he was also the Rockland school bus contractor. Bob was committed to his hometown and throughout his life supported and sponsored many civic activities and youth sporting events. In past years, he served as a basketball referee and was instrumental in Operation Goblin. He was honored in his lifetime to be named Lions Club Man of the Year and to be inducted into the Rockland High School Hall of Fame. In 1953, he married his wife Joan and they began raising their family of four children. Bob attended Holy Family Church where he was an active member and served as an usher at Sunday Mass throughout his life. An avid sports fan, he especially liked to follow his beloved Red Sox. He will be greatly missed. Bob is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan Clark Christie of Rockland, his daughter Paula Christie of Marshfield, his son Robert B. Christie, Jr., and his wife Ruth Byrne of Rockland, his daughter Jeanne Christie of Whitman, and his son William E. Christie, II and his wife Cinde Warmington of Concord, New Hampshire. He is also survived by his grandchildren Lily Christie of Bridgewater, Robert B. Christie, III of Rockland and Anna Christie Higgins and her husband, Conor of Jupiter, Florida. He is predeceased by his brother William E. Christie, Jr. Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Homes, 45 East Water St, Rockland, on Monday from 4-8pm. Funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Church, 403 Union St, Rockland on Tuesday at 11 AM. Burial at Holy Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Holy Family Church.
