In memory of
Rita Koplan
January 6, 1922 - November 4, 2016 Rita Koplan of San Antonio passed away at the age of 94 on November 5, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, "Kope" Koplan. Rita is survived by her daughter, Ninai Koplan; her son and daughter-in-law, David and Sherrie Koplan; her son Rob Koplan; and her two grandchildren, Katie Koplan and Kevin Koplan. She is also survived by her long time friend and caretaker, Anamaria Ramirez. Rita served her country during WWII by enlisting in the Navy as a WAVE (which was when she learned to drink her beloved coffee black during her duties that included night watch since sugar was rationed then). Rita also was a pioneer by starting in 1965 what was a unique business in San Antonio in its time which was a store devoted entirely to the kitchen and tabletop: some San Antonians will remember it as The Plate and Platter. Not only was her business successful for the decades to follow, she was able to expand to multiple locations. She was taken seriously as a woman in business in a time when most women weren't taken seriously, being honored by many trade magazines as well as a feature article in SA Magazine. Other contributing factors to her success in business can be attributed to her being willing to take a chance and try new things, listening to her customers' needs, and never missing an episode of The French Chef with Julia Child on KLRN. Rita was an influential presence not only to her children and grandchildren, but to many who sought her wisdom and advice. She is also known by countless others for her sweetness and kindness. Rita will be missed but always remembered. Memorials can be made to Jewish Family Services of San Antonio, KLRN Public Television, San Antonio Museum of Art, San Antonio Symphony or to a charity of your choice.
