Rita L. Johnson, 92, of Kearney, died Sunday, April 16, 2017, at Mother Hull Home in Kearney. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church in Kearney with the Rev. Sylvia Karlsson officiating. Interment will follow at the Kearney Cemetery. Visitation is 5 - 7 p.m., Tuesday at the O'Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are suggested to the First Lutheran Church, CHI Health Good Samaritan Foundation or to Donor's Choice. Condolences may be shared online atwww.osrfh.com. O'Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Rita Louise Johnson was born July 25, 1924, in Kearney, to Carl A. and Lillian C. (Nickel) Meyers. She grew up South of Kearney and was a 1942 graduate of Kearney High School. Rita then attended St. Luke's School of Nursing in Denver, Colo., graduating in 1945. Her career took her to the West Coast until 1959, when she moved back to Minden and later to Custer County. May 31, 1961, Rita was united in marriage to Orian O. Johnson at the First Lutheran Church in Kearney. They had met at a dance. The couple moved back to Kearney in 1984. Rita was a member of the Kearney First Lutheran Church, the Willing Workers of Custer County and enjoyed playing cards with several different groups over the years. She loved playing dominoes with her nieces and nephews. Her other hobbies included knitting, crocheting, gardening, fishing and traveling. Survivors include her 13 nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Joan Johnson of Mason City, and Janet Claire Johnson of Kearney; and many special friends. Rita was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orian Johnson; sister and brother-in-law, Viola and Forrest Mehrten; and three uncles, Otto, Herman and John Meyers.
