In memory of
Rick Jones Rare are those who have squeezed more out of life than Rick Jones. Surrounded by his loving family, Rick passed away at home in Fort Collins, Colorado on the evening of October 11,2016. He battled valiantly, yet gracefully to the end against the esophageal cancer that took his life too soon. He was 51 years old. Rick was a modern-day renaissance man who loved outdoor adventure and cherished every moment he shared with his family and friends. Richard Edward Jones was born in Rushville, Nebraska on November 25, 1964. He grew up running with the pack in Chadron and Lincoln, Nebraska and graduated with honors from Lincoln East High School in 1983. True to his nature, he excelled at many endeavors including academics, athletics and musical performance. He started for the Spartans football team, placed second at the Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament and was a rock star in East's annual Expressions music revue. With Rick's Nebraska heritage came his love of the Pine Ridge area and all things Husker. Rick's college years were spent in Golden, Colorado at the Colorado School of Mines. He graduated with his degree in Mining Engineering in 1988. His time at Mines, and the friends he met there, immersed him in the Colorado mountain lifestyle that he embraced his whole life. He also adopted the Broncos and Rockies into his circle of beloved sports teams. Rick's career as a mining engineer led him to Arizona and Utah where he held demanding positions that utilized his many talents and skills. He moved back to Colorado with his family in 2002 where he settled in Fort Collins, beginning a career in technical sales and engineering with several companies. As an avid outdoors-man, Rick was an expert mountain biker, snow and water skier, fly fisherman, white water rafter, hunter and trekker. He excelled at football, wrestling and off road triathlons. He was a fierce competitor at any sport or game. He was not a good golfer. Though he was a tough and rugged individual, he also had a soft side. He loved to play guitar, sing, dance (especially to the band Cake), cook, host parties, travel and chill with his family. His love of music was profound and helped him connect with the sunshine of his life - Kelly Peters Jones. They met in 2008 when Rick was Kelly's prospective client. They were buddies for several years. Their lives changed forever when they one day realized that they were in fact a match made in heaven. Those lucky enough to see them sing and play together saw firsthand the love, affection and appreciation they held for each other. They were married on January 1, 2016 only to learn of Rick's diagnosis 5 days later. Rick's passion for living was infectious and he built strong, lasting friendships with an expansive, diverse and loving circle of people who joined in on his wondrous journey through life. Rick is survived by his wife Kelly Jones, their children Jackson and Sophie Jones and Hailey and Jacob Peters; his parents Rex and Sharon Jones of Chadron, NE; brother Jerry and Lisa Jones and their children Jessica and Sam of Wichita, KS; sister Julie and Marty Coniglio and their children Hayley and Taylor of Arvada; his father-in-law Luke Kjolhede of Loveland; mother-in-law Patricia Kjolhede of Fort Collins; sister-in-law Casey Kjolhede of Fort Collins and brother-in-law Chris and Kimba Kjolhede of Longmont; and an immensely loved extended family. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 21st at 10:00 AM at the Ellis Ranch Event Center, 2331 Ellis Ranch Lane, Loveland, CO 80538. Dress casually for outdoor service.
