Richard A Strickler Des moines Judge Richard A. Strickler passed away October 10, 2016 with his family by his side. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Monday October 17, 2016 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 600 6th Avenue, Des Moines, IA. He was born June 18, 1925 in Washington, Iowa. He was raised on a farm by his aunt and uncle near Keota, Iowa where he attended a one room country school. At the age of 12 he moved to Des Moines and lived there with his Mother and Dad Milton Strickler. He graduated from North High School where he is in the Hall of Fame. He was a two year state champion wrestler. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Corp in World War II serving as an officer on a B-24. He then enrolled at Drake University and graduated with two degrees from Drake, Liberal Arts and Bachelor of Law. He worked as County Attorney before entering private law practice. In 1977 Governor Ray appointed him to District Court Judge of the Fifth District where he served on the bench for 22 years. Dick loved hunting and fishing with his son, Dr. Richard (Nick) Strickler Jr. He coached Little League baseball and basketball for many years. He enjoyed yard work, his flowers, and his antique clocks. He was very active in his younger years at St. John's Lutheran Church. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Betty and enjoyed over 70 wonderful years together. The joy of their lives was their son, Dr. Nick Strickler. Not only was he the best dad, he was his best friend. They especially enjoyed hunting and fishing together as well as playing catch in the backyard. He is survived by his wife, Betty; his son, Dr. Richard Strickler Jr.; and grandchildren, Drake and Lindie. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Iowa.
