Richard M. Smith Vero Beach, FL Richard Merrill Smith, 82, died peacefully on January 4, 2017, at his residence at Willowbrook Court, Indian River Estates, Vero Beach, Florida, surrounded by his family. Richard (Dick) was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on February 9, 1934, to the late Seymour M. and Elizabeth Jones Smith. He leaves his two daughters and son from Massachusetts--Lauri Deary of Longmeadow, Deborah Anderson of East Longmeadow, and Scott and wife Lisa of Agawam, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and niece Judith Moore of Longmeadow. He also leaves several cousins. Richard also leaves his dear friends Joe and Carol Davis, Vero Beach, and Sally (Wallace) Smith, formerly of West Virginia. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Marilyn Moore and his favorite cat, Bud. After graduating from the University of Vermont, Richard proudly served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force as a pilot. His military time shaped his life, work ethics, and lessons he passed on to his family. Following his military service, Richard entered the insurance industry, founding his own agency, which later became the Smith and Toner Agency in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. After his retirement, Richard moved to Vero Beach, Florida, to enjoy his passions, golf and competitive tennis. Richard was an active member of the Community Church of Vero Beach, serving as a Deacon. In life he enjoyed coaching youth hockey, was a talented craftsman and pianist, and enjoyed landscaping and traveling. Richard was an avid sports fan. He especially treasured spending time with family and friends at the family cottage in Black Point, Connecticut.
