Richard D. Ray October 10, 2016 Richard Dean Ray, 83, of Fort Myers, Florida, passed away on October 10, 2016 after medical complications following a routine medical procedure. The celebration of his life will be held at National Cremation Society in North Fort Myers on Hancock Bridge Parkway, from 5pm to 7pm on Wednesday, October 19, 2016. Known by his friends as Dick, he was born on a farm in Bloomingburg, Ohio on May 13, 1933. He graduated high school and went on to join the United States Air Force from 1953 to 1957. He returned to Ohio at the end of his obligated service. After meeting on a blind date set up by his mother, Dick married Fort Myers native, Patricia McCall in July 1959 in Ohio. Once married, they traveled to Florida during winter to meet Pat's family; Dick decided he liked not shoveling snow in Ohio and they decided to stay in Fort Myers. They remained married 50 years until Pat's death in August 2009. Dick worked as a foreman for Fort Myers Vault and Crematory Services for 35 years. He and Pat built a home in Paradise Shores, a suburb of east Lee County, off Old Olga Road. Dick attended Olga Baptist Church serving as a deacon of the church for many years. He also served as an active member of the Lion's Club. In the late 1980's, he started his first term of volunteer service with the Lee County Sheriffs' Department. Once retired, Dick and Pat set off to see the United States camping and visiting old friends. They set up a summer home in Hendersonville, NC and became 'official snowbirds' until the death of his wife in 2009. He began his second term of volunteer service with the Sheriffs' Office as a V.O.I.C.E member. He loved directing traffic at the base of the Fort Myers Beach bridge during tourist season. He participated in many details with his V.O.I.C.E buddy, Helen Byrnes. He was an exceptionally active man and last year went to motorcycle safety school and to purchase a Polaris Slingshot motorcycle at the age of 82. He took great pleasure cruising along Fort Myers Beach and McGregor Blvd sharing these rides with his good friends. He stayed active in his Heritage Point community with his close pals Ben and Gunilla Nilsson, Roland and Ada Davis, Wayne and Glenda Bode and Byron and Mary Jo Card. Locally, Dick is survived by his favorite daughter Shara and her partner Kevin Stephens, his sister-in-law, Norma McDaniel; his nephews and their spouses Matt and Dianne McDaniel, Mark and Karen McDaniel, Brian and Sandra Roberts; his niece Jana and her husband David Keljek; his nephew Michael Bollinger (Sebring), his great niece Diana and Chris Concepcion and their children, his great nephew and wife, Drew and Ashley McDaniel; great nephews Randy Santerfeit and Keith and Nicole Freeman Jr., their four children and extended family Sarea Rivera-Mess and Stepheny Rodriguez.
