Richard Allen McDaniel
July 11, 1940 - September 23, 2016 Richard Allen McDaniel, 76, of Indian Wells, California, passed away on Friday, September 23, 2016.Richard, known to his friends as Dick, was born on July 11, 1940 in Lima, Ohio to Kenneth and Charlotte McDaniel. He grew up in Lima, Rossford, and Rocky River, Ohio, aside his siblings, Kenneth, Jon, and Peg. In high school, Dick was an all-around athlete, winning all-conference honors in football. Dick graduated from Ohio State, where he became a lifelong Buckeye fan. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and enjoyed playing intramural football, basketball, baseball, and he lettered in Track and Field. After graduation, Dick moved to Newport Beach, California. His career blossomed when he became Controller for Amcord. He later worked as Controller for St. John Knits. During this time, Dick was an active member of Big Canyon Country Club where he enjoyed golf and playing cards with his friends.In 1994 he married Claire Spencer. They moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Dick loved everything about the great outdoors: fishing, hiking, and hunting. He began a career in real estate, working for Jackson Hole Realty and later Sotheby's. After a day at the office, Dick could be found fishing from the Snake River in front of his house. In June of 2013, Dick and Claire moved to Southern California, where he lived the remainder of his life. He is survived by his wife, Claire McDaniel; his daughter, Kathleen McDaniel Peterson (Travis) of Orange, California; his son, Scott Anderson McDaniel (Katie) of Meridian, Idaho; his step-daughters, Laurie Spencer of Laguna Beach, California, Liz Spencer of Irvine, California, and Lisa Spencer of Oakland, California; and his grandchildren, Blake Spencer, Spencer Steele, Cody Adams, Nicholas McDaniel, Hailey Kay Peterson, Chelsea McDaniel, and Evan McDaniel. He was a loving husband, father, step-father, and Papa. His quick wit and deep laughter will be missed by all who knew him. The memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, October 14 at Community Church Congregational, 611 Heliotrope Avenue, Corona del Mar, California, 92625.
