FAIRBORN — LTC Richard John Lorette (USAF Ret.) of Massanutten, VA died January 10, 2017 at 87 years of age. He was born January 22, 1929 in Holyoke, MA. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Janet Biebel Crawford Lorette, his 3 daughters — Joanne Sperandio Lorette of Beavercreek, OH; Jeanne-Marie Lorette Levy (Gary) of Frederick, MD; Patricia A. Phillips (Bradley) of Beavercreek, OH; 8 adult grandchildren; Michael Sperandio and Steven Sperandio (Jessica) of NY, Christine Collins Edwards (Kyle) of Columbus, OH; Jennifer Collins Speicher (Christopher) of Jacksonville, FL; Elizabeth Mahon of Washington, DC; Sarah Phillips of Mt. Washington, OH; Rachel Phillips of Huber Heights, OH; Daniel Phillips of Bowling Green, OH; 3 great grandchildren; and sister, Shirley Osborn of Mesa, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents Edmond Olympe Lorette and Orise Jennings (Houle) Lorette as well as his daughter, Judith Lorette Russell. He graduated in 1950 from the United States Military Academy at West Point, served combat tours in Korea and Southeast Asia, and was a Navigator in the USAF during his 23 years in the military; he taught at the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio after earning his Doctorate in Business Administration at the Harvard School of Business. He retired from military service and taught at several universities for the next 15 years, including State University of New York/ Binghamton, University of Southern California, Ball State University, Loyola University and James Madison University. Having lived in Massanutten, VA since 1987, he was active in the Massanutten Lions Club, his local American Legion and the Elkton United Methodist Church choir. He helped create a number of local charities to support Lions activities as well as several charities that support children and local schools. Golf was his favorite sport, and he played often. A memorial service will be held at Elkton United Methodist Church in Elkton, VA at 1 pm on Saturday, January 14th. Burial will be at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY at a time to be determined. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Lions of Massanutten Foundation, Inc. (LOMFI President, PO Box 373, McGaheysville, VA 22840) or to Friends of the East Rockingham Communities, Inc. (FERCC Treasurer, 242 Kensington, Elkton, VA 22827).
