Richard Edward Kelly 1940-2016 Richard Edward Kelly, 76, passed away Monday morning, October 10, 2016 at the Clear Lake Regional Medical Center in Houston, Texas. He was born on May 31, 1940 in Montclair, New Jersey and spent most of his early years in Orange and West Orange, New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Helen (Altoz) Kelly and his wife Patricia (McAvoy) Kelly. Richard lived life on his own terms and was always ready to lend a hand to those in need. After the passing of his wife Patricia, he spent many years enjoying a simple life with his dog, Thelma, and visiting with friends and family. Richard died due to complications from a lifetime of tobacco use. Richard proudly served in the United States Army as a Paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. Upon leaving the Army, he began a career in law enforcement and rose to the rank of Captain with the West Orange, New Jersey Police Department where his wife Patricia also served. Prior to retiring in 1987, he was the Police Chief in Flagler Beach, Florida. Richard and his wife Patricia moved to the state of Texas in 2003 to be near their sons Mark and Scott and their grandchildren, Samantha, Claudia, Claire and Charlotte. He is survived by his two sons, four grandchildren, his brother Tim and his daughter-in-law, Gabrielle Giffords. He enjoyed discussing politics and current events and had a keen sense of people from his years as a detective. He was quite the character and will be missed. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 3:00pm in the Chapel of Forest Park East Funeral Home, 21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster, Texas 77598. Interment to follow at Forest Park East Cemetery. Donations can be made in Richard's name to the MD Anderson Cancer Center.
