Richard Gibbs McGIMSEY Sr.
Richard (Dick) Gibbs McGimsey Sr., 85, of Roanoke, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Dick was born on March 7, 1928, in Caldwell County, N.C. to the late Gamewell Charles and Bertha Irene McGimsey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Robert McGimsey, his brother-in-law, Waitsel (Bob) Smith, his sister-in-law, Jane McGimsey, his niece, Debbie Smith Yancey, and his great-nephew, Abel Pitts. He graduated from Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. in 1951 and later served on their Board of Trustees for 22 years and was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus in 1991. He was also drafted into the Army in 1951 and served two years at Fort Kobe in the Canal Zone of the Republic of Panama. On August 14, 1958, Dick married Rachel Grant and proclaimed it to be, "the best thing I ever did." They shared a wonderful 55 years together. In 1958, Dick and Rachel moved to Richmond, Va. from North Carolina to help establish Moore's Building Supply. They relocated to Roanoke in 1963 when Moore's moved its headquarters. Dick worked as Executive Vice President of Marketing and when he retired in 1988, the company had grown from one store to 98 stores in 11 states. He also founded RGM Properties in 1978. Dick served on the Boards of the United Way, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the United Methodist Homes, Ferrum College, the National Home Builders Association, and many committees at South Roanoke United Methodist Church where he and Rachel have been members for many years. He is survived by his wife, Rachel McGimsey; his sister, Rose Ann McGimsey Smith; his sisters-in-law, Patricia Grant Williard and husband, John, Bette McGimsey, and Patricia McGimsey; his son, Richard Gibbs McGimsey Jr. and wife, Ellen; granddaughters, Caroline and Meredith McGimsey; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews and their families. A memorial service celebrating Dick's life will be held at South Roanoke United Methodist Church, Roanoke, Va. on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. L. Stanley Wright Jr. and the Rev. Robert H. Garner officiating. A reception at the church will follow the service.
