BATES, Richard "Dick" Allan Richard "Dick" Allan Bates, 79, passed away January 22, 2017 in Austin, Texas, with family by his side. Richard was born August 22, 1937 in Providence, Rhode Island, the only child of Rollin Witt and Helen Louise (Gerlach) Bates. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Richard married Marcia Marie Huseby of Circle, Montana in 1959 and they had 3 children: Dean, Mark, and Linda. After 22 years of service, he retired from the Air Force, and went on to pursue his second career. He attended Angelo State University in Texas and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. In 1982, he started as a psychiatric nurse at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas. In 1990, he moved to Shoal Creek Hospital in Austin, TX where he worked in the Chemical Dependence and Detox Unit until he retired in 1996. Following the death of his first wife, Richard married Jane Juhnke in 1996. Together they volunteered at Bethany United Methodist Church, where he taught training for the Stephens' Ministries. He co-facilitated Grief Share, a grief recovery group, since its inception. He also volunteered for 19 years at Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and Seton Northwest Hospital. His hobbies included photography, attending arts and crafts festivals and maintaining extensive landscaping at his home. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marcia in 1995, his wife Jane in 2009, and daughters-in-law, Regina and Kristin. Survived by sons, Dean (Nita Browne) Bates of San Angelo, TX and Mark Bates of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Linda (Tom) Hetrick of Southlake, TX; and grandchildren, Kelsey (Kade) Poper of Tulsa, OK, Cathleen Bates of San Angelo, TX, Joseph Gignac Bates of Colorado Springs, CO, and Helen, Amy, and Matthew Hetrick of Southlake, TX. A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Bethany United Methodist Church, 10010 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, Texas, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to: Bethany United Methodist Church, Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, Seton Northwest Hospital, or any charity of choice.
