Raymond H. "Ray" Thomas Evansville, Ind. Raymond H. "Ray" Thomas, 89, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 12, 2017 after a courageous battle with cancer. Raymond was born in Union County, Kentucky on July 22, 1927 as the seventh of eight children of Joe and Lillian (Heavrin) Thomas. He grew up on a farm in rural Kentucky and that dedication to hard work sustained and was ingrained in him throughout his life. Ray's yard work was a huge source of pride as he immaculately maintained it up until his death. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, a life member of VFW Post 1114 and faithfully served as minister of communion at St. Mary's Hospital for over fifteen years. Ray graduated from Morganfield High School in 1945 and joined the Navy, serving in the South Pacific. After he was honorably discharged he went to work at Indiana Bell Telephone for 36 years, retiring in 1983. Ray was married to Lottie Thomas for 41 years, who preceded him in death. He later married Joyce Townsend with whom he traveled extensively visiting California, Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Canada, and Cape Cod, just to name a few. After fourteen years of marriage, Joyce passed away in 2007, leaving him to cherish her memory as well. He is survived by his step-daughter from Lottie, Patty Jackson and his stepchildren from Joyce, Steve Townsend (Rebecca), Karen Townsend, Jeff Townsend (Soni) and numerous step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and his stepsons, Walter Sandefur and Wayne Townsend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 17, 2017 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 2301 N. Stockwell Rd., Evansville, IN 47715 with Father Ted Tempel and Father Zach Etienne celebrating. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Mausoleum. Friends may visit from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Ave., Evansville, IN 47711 and again from 9:00 am until mass time at the church on Friday.
