Ramon L. Smouse
Ramon L. Smouse Virginia Beach - - Ramon Lee Smouse, 90, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at his Atlantic Shores home on Thursday, October 13, 2016. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa on December 4, 1925 to the late Frank Smouse and Jennye Lee (née Hicks) Smouse. Following his graduation from Bagley High School in Iowa, Ray attended Iowa State College and the Notre Dame Midshipman's School under the Navy V-12 Program. During World War II, he served his country on the USS SC 1009 and later on the USS Mount Olympus. Recalled to active duty during the Korean War, he served as CIC Officer on the USS O'Hare and Operations Officer on the USS Corry. In the 1960s, Ray served as Commanding Officer of the USS Loeser and the USS Henley Reserve Crews. In 1970, he assumed command as Commodore, Reserve Destroyer Division, 5th Naval District in Norfolk, VA. He retired at the rank of Captain. Ray was employed as a civil servant, retiring in 1986, after 20 years with the Fleet Combat Direction Systems Support Activity at Dam Neck. In addition to his career in the Civil Service, Ray had previously been employed as the East Coast Regional Manager for Phillips 66 Oil Company, as well as an oil distributor through Smouse Oil Company. Ray was a co-owner of the Sherwood Lounge located at 21st Street and Atlantic Avenue. Ray was a man of strong faith, believing in the power and strength of Jesus Christ's love. He was a past member and Elder of First Presbyterian Church, Kirkwood Presbyterian Church in Bradenton, FL and a recent member of Lynnhaven Presbyterian Church. Throughout his long life, Ray was an active church volunteer, as well as a volunteer with Kiwanis Club, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels and the North Virginia Beach Civic League. His wife of 42 years, Eleanor (née Blackshaw) Smouse, and his sister, Barbara (née Smouse) Sutterfield, preceded him in death. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Winifred, his sister, Beverly (née Smouse) Nuckols, and his daughters, Janet (Arthur) Garner and Cathy (Kevin) Kilcoyne, grandchildren Amber (Wayne) Gwaltney, Christopher (Arevik) Garner, Casey Kilcoyne and Kyle Kilcoyne, and two great grandchildren, Katherine and Daniel Gwaltney. No less devoted to and loved by are his step-children, Michele Shean, Annette (Billy) Dickerson, Gina (Carter Hotchkiss) Pitrone, Eva (Barney) Howard, Maria (Gabriel) Molina, Winnie (Andy) Mackey, Peter Pitrone, and Ted (Georgia) Pitrone, 15 step-grandchildren and 10 step-great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 1pm at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach. Internment of ashes will follow at Princess Anne Memorial Park.
