Ralph J. Massaro
MASSARO - Ralph J., resident of Williston Park for 58 years, died peacefully in his home at age 90 on October 17, 2016. Beloved father of John, Frank, Jane and Lee. Loving father-in-law of Lori, Thomas and Erik. Adored grandfather of Joseph, Scott, Mary, Nikki, Sofia, Ella, Portia, Annie and William. Ralph was predeceased by his beloved wife Sara and his brothers Louis, Joseph, Sabatino and William and is survived by his dear sister Antoinette. He was also dearly loved by his many nieces and nephews for his unfailing kindness and generosity. Ralph was born in Brooklyn on April 16, 1926 and raised in Great Neck, where he worked in the family ice and coal business. He later attended Clarkson College and became an engineer employed at Sperry and Grumman, where in 1969 he worked on the lunar module for the first moon landing. During World War II Ralph was drafted into the Army and shipped to the Philippines, where he was training with his unit for a land invasion of Japan when the war abruptly ended. In his later years, Ralph often reflected that he'd had a wonderful life, his one great sorrow being the loss of his brother Joseph in combat in 1943. Ralph was very active in his community, particularly in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and town baseball where he coached his sons' teams for several years. Many boys who grew up in Williston Park in the 1960s undoubtedly remember Ralph as a fair, honest and mild-mannered man who always made them feel good about themselves regardless of their abilities. Visitation on Wednesday 2-5 and 7-9 pm, Cassidy Funeral Home, 156 Willis Avenue, Mineola. Funeral Mass Thursday 11:15 am at St. Aidan's Church, Williston Park. Interment St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.
