Ralph E. Hendel
Ralph E. Hendel 1937-2017 Ralph passed from this life on Thursday, April 13, 2017 after a brief illness. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served his country from 1954 to 1957. Ralph worked as a welder at the Philadelphia Navy Yard until joining the Philadelphia Police Department in 1964. He received his BA in Criminal Justice and wrote Police Study Guides for the Davis Publishing Company in California. He rose in rank very quickly and eventually achieved a promotion of Chief Inspector in 1991. During his career he received various assignments; Detective Headquarters to oversee the department's Homicide, Narcotics and Major Crimes Unit; Command of the Department's Internal Affairs Division and others. Upon his promotions to Chief Inspector he was asked to command the Philadelphia Police Academy and Advanced Training Unit. After retirement in 1993 he devoted his time to elementary school mentoring and woodworking. Ralph made Milton, Florida his home in 2001 and continued to mentor and enjoy his hobby of woodworking. He later directed his attention to learning gardening and became a Master Gardener in Santa Rosa County. In 2013 Ralph was named Master Gardener of the year for the county. He leaves behind his wife Barbara McConnell-Hendel, three children; Terry (Steven) Haber, Karen (Andrew) Sprankle-Brader, Bob (Sandy) Hendel and three step children Jill (Ronnie) Albritton, Joe (Lydia) McConnell, Jason McConnell, nine grandchildren and a beloved sister Norma (Lou) Haenel. He will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to know him. His memorial and interment will be conducted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
