Rainey was born Jan. 15, 1941, in Cuthand, Texas, to Marvin Murrah Varner and Velma Faye (Bryant) Varner. Rainey grew up on a farm and spent the majority of his early years in the East Texas area with his 10 brothers and sisters. Rainey met Shirley Jo Edwards in Graham, Texas, and fell madly in love with her. Rainey made her his wife on Nov. 24, 1954. Rainey and Shirley made their first home in Lockney, Texas, where he was working at the time. They lived in several surrounding towns before finally making Floydada their home. After retiring from mechanic work Rainey worked out on the farm with the Carthel Brothers, Cleo Whittle and helped haul pumpkins with Pumpkin Pyle, Rainey was never able to sit still long and somehow managed to find time to mow yards for many people around the community. Rainey's free time was spent with his family and was active in the church. Rainey was a man of faith and loved the Lord. Rainey loved his family and spent his life making sure they were taken care of and knew he loved them.
