PRESTON JAMES 'SONNY' MCINTYRE LUMBERTON — Preston James "Sonny" McIntyre Jr., 77, of Lumberton, died Friday, April 14, 2017. He was the son of the late Lillie Bell Sinclair McIntyre and the Rev. Preston James McIntyre Sr., an AME minister in Robeson, Columbus and New Hanover counties. Preston attended W.H. Knuckles School and J.H. Hayswood High School, and Kittrell Junior College. Preston was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and upon discharge he was employed with the late W.W. Snow in the antique furniture and restoration business, which he eventually inherited. He operated in the business for more than 50 years in Robeson County and across the state. He was a descendant of the Pittman family, who were a part of the early founders of the 137-year-old Sandy Grove Baptist Church in Lumberton. Funeral services were held Friday, April 21, at Elizabeth Heights Cemetery in Lumberton. He is survived by five brothers, Rodney McIntyre of Atlanta, Kuhusu Wanzu (Aisha) of Atlanta, the Rev. John McIntyre (Gloria) of Fairmont, Victor McIntyre (Lavonia) of Atlanta, and Paul McIntyre Sr. (Hope) of Lumberton; six sisters, Joan Johnson, Geneva McIntyre, and Wanda Ayers (David), all of Greensboro, the Rev. Janice McClelland of Parkton, Joyce Gentry, and Lillian Clayburn of Lumberton; and 39 nieces and nephews. Arrangements were by McMillan Funeral Home of Lumberton.
