In memory of
Phillip Joseph Moloso III
Professor Phillip Joseph Moloso III was born Sept. 1, 1936 in Kennewick. He passed away quietly at home in Glendale, Arizona on Sept. 28, 2016. The Urban Dictionary defines the word "moloso" as "a unique person who is strange and interesting." Phil was definitely one of a kind--brilliant, gentle, kind, humble, and endlessly curious about life. He collected music and loved a witty joke. Phil graduated from Seattle's Queen Anne High School in 1955, tied for the top of his class. His continued education included a B.A. from Reed College, an M.A .from the University of Denver, and graduate study at Yale. He self-identified as an anthropologist, a linguistics scholar, a musician, a professor, and a polymath. He was on the faculty at Glendale Community College from 1966-2002, as a librarian, a professor of Business and Mathematics, and as a Department Chair. Phil taught courses in English literature, composition, math, music, graphic arts and computer science. He loved learning and sharing his discoveries with others, touching the lives of thousands of students. Upon retirement, he continued to study music, learning the bassoon, oboe, guitar, and continuing with the harpsichord and piano. He also composed "Kindertoten II," recently performed by the Glendale Community College Guitar Ensemble. Phil was preceded in death by his long-term partner, Gus; by his brother, Michael Reeve Moloso, and by his parents, Dorris Kathleen Moloso and Phillip Joseph Moloso II. He is survived by nephews Mike Moloseau and Zachary Klaas, and by niece Mary Moloseau Goetz. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at the Glendale Community College Performing Arts Center at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22.
