Peter G. Pantelis
Waterford - Peter G. Pantelis, 90, of Waterford, passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, Oct. 14, 2016, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, New London. Mr. Pantelis was born on Dec. 3, 1925, the son of the late George and Mersina (Mastrogeorgiou) Pantelis. He was married to the former Lucille Kimball, on Aug. 21,1960, at St. Barbaras Church in New Haven. A 1944 graduate of the former Chapman Technical School, Peter attended the University of Connecticut, and received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Hartford. He was granted his master's degree in civil engineering from the University of Rhode Island. He was an Army veteran of World War II; and worked in the engineering department at Electric Boat Company in Groton for over 37 years. An avid runner, Mr. Pantelis participated in many local races as well as 23 marathons, and ran Mt. Washington many times. His proudest achievement was winning the 70+ age bracket at the Athens Marathon in 1997 in Greece. He was a life member of both VFW New London Post and Order of AHEPA Winthrop Chapter. He is survived by his wife and three children, Peter G. Pantelis Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Stratford, Irene Burrows of Waterford, Thomas S. Pantelis and his wife, Erin, of Portsmouth, N.H.; and two grandchildren, Kristin Pantelis of Stratford and Lauren Hill of Los Angeles, Calif. Peter had been predeceased by his brother, Constantine; and sisters, Mary Kavarnos, Ruth Luke and Bessie McCary. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church, 200 Hempstead St., New London. Burial will follow in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London. Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be directed to St. Sophia Church.
