DeBoer, Peter Grand Rapids, Michigan Peter Pousma DeBoer, age 87, from Grand Rapids, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 10, 2017. Peter is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Joy; his children: Bonnie Nyenhuis, Walter and Jesslyn DeBoer, Peter and Nancy DeBoer, and Susan and Bill Steketee; his grandchildren: Jeremy (Liz) Nyenhuis, Jessica Nyenhuis, Dennis DeBoer, Philip DeBoer, Marissa DeBoer and fiance Nate Dierlam, Peter (Anna) DeBoer, Grace (Adam) Bol, Trina (Stanton) Huizenga, Steven Baas, Matthew Baas, and Madeline Baas; his great grandchildren: John, Joe, Nora, Jonathan, and Wilhelmina; his in-laws: John Kosters and Jenean (Ken) Doornink; and many nieces and nephews. Peter was preceded in death by: daughter Jeanne Susan, son-in-law Ronald Nyenhuis, and siblings George and Lillian DeBoer, Mae and John Moezelaar, and Evelyn and Bill Huizing. Peter was born in Prospect Park, NJ to Walter and Trina (Pousma) DeBoer. He graduated from Calvin College and earned Master's Degrees from Montclair State College and the University of Iowa. He earned his PhD from the University of Chicago. He served numerous terms on the school boards of both the GR Christian Schools and the GR Public Schools. He served his church as an elder, church school teacher, and choir member. He directed church choirs and sang with the Calvin College Alumni Choir, the GR Choir of Men and Boys, and the Chamber Choir of GR. He taught at Dordt College for 5 years, then Calvin College for 32 years in the Education Department. He also authored numerous publications, and found many ways to be of service in the community through volunteer work. Special thanks to the kind caregivers at Fresenius Dialysis Clinic and Raybrook Rehab. A memorial service will be held at Calvin Christian Reformed Church (700 Ethel SE, 49506) on Saturday, January 14, at 1:00 pm with Rev. Rebecca Jordan Heys. The family will receive visitors at the church on Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m., and then again after the memorial service.
