In memory of
Peggyrose Urner April 20, 1930 - Feb. 2, 2017 Bakersfield, CA Peggyrose Urner (Peg) passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, February 2, 2017. She was born in Bakersfield, California, on April 20, 1930 to Phil and Daisy Urner. Peg graduated from East Bakersfield High School and earned a B.A. degree in Art from the University of California at Santa Barbara in just three years. Peg studied Lettering at Art Center School in Los Angeles and Photography at Bakersfield College. In 1955, Peg became the Staff Graphic Artist at Kern County Library in Bakersfield. Her job was to artfully advertise the books and materials available. In 1960, Peg won a Merit Award from National Tuberculosis Association for a design she submitted for Christmas Seal. Peg later earned a teaching credential from San Francisco State University and soon began teaching at Highland Elementary School in Oakland, where she taught first and second grades. She loved teaching and used her considerable art skills to enhance the experience of her students. She even wrote an original song honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for them to perform for their parents. When she returned to Bakersfield in the late 1970s to be closer to her aging parents, she became a substitute teacher/tutor in the Bakersfield City School District. She was the second of Phil and Daisy's five children. Peg was a unique and caring person who always put her heart, soul and creative ability into everything she did. She was a wonderful daughter, sister and aunt to her loving family and a gift to her friends and students. We will all miss the strong and happy spirit that sustained her throughout her life. Her family is planning a celebration of her life April 22, at 2pm at First United Methodist Church in Bakersfield, CA. Please leave your stories or comments about Peg at www.never-gone.com .
