Osias G. Goren
June 27, 1922 - October 15, 2016 Osias G Goren, businessman and philanthropist, passed away on October 15, 2016 at the age of 94. Ozzie was born in the Bronx on June 27, 1922 to Nettie and Julius Goren. He graduated Hofstra College in 1942 after which he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, where he became a navigator/bombardier. While still in the service, he married his wife of the past 72 years, Dorothy. He moved to Los Angeles in 1946 where they had their three children. Aside from his business endeavors (furniture, law, real estate and agriculture), Ozzie's passion was his devotion to philanthropy and community service. He was deeply involved in the Jewish community, having served as general campaign chair, Federation president and chair and/or board member of innumerable committees, boards and meetings, including many Federation missions to Israel, as well a serving as Chair of the California Fair Employment and Housing Commission for twelve years. In addition, Ozzie was involved with the Los Angeles Head Start program, donating 1,000 Christmas dinners to underprivileged families for the past 58 years. He lived a life of service to his family and community as fully as was possible. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his children, Jerry (Julia), Carol (Rob) and Bruce (Susie) as well as fourteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two more on the way. Ozzie's memorial service will be held on October 19 at noon at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery, Culver City. Donations in Ozzie's memory can be sent to the Jewish Teen Initiative in care of the Jewish Federation of Greater LA, Jewish Family Services or Jewish Home for the Aging.
