Opal E. Merriwether
Opal E. Merriwether, 91, of New Kensington, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017. She was born Oct. 14, 1925, in Brackenridge, to the late Otis and Odessa Wright Manley, and was a New Kensington resident the majority of her life. Mrs. Merriwether worked in the dietary department of Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights for many years. She belonged to Bibleway Christian Fellowship Church of New Kensington. In her younger years, she sang with the Wings of Melody Gospel group on WKPA every Sunday morning. Opal read the Bible every day, and prayed for her family and friends daily. She enjoyed watching Steelers football. She leaves behind her children, Sheila Renay Witcher, of Oakwood Village, Ohio, Morse Calvin (Regina) Merriwether, of Stone Mountain, Ga., Sherwin Arnay (Henry) Wilson, of New Kensington, and Marc Leigh Merriwether, of Apollo; grandchildren, Joseph Turner, Charles Turner, Dana Merriwether, Scott Witcher, Renee (Desmond) Johnson, Shanell (Jerrell) Alexander, and Morse Merriwether III; and great-grandchildren, Desmond, Savannah, Wynston, and Denver. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Walter, Demaree, Gilbert, and Willie Manley, Carrie Duffey, and Maebelle Jones. Viewing will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 1150 Asa W. Roberts Way (formerly Fourth Avenue), New Kensington, by her pastor, the Rev. Mitchel Nickols.
