O. Jefferey Berven
O. Jefferey Berven August 15, 1946 - April 8, 2017 O. Jeffrey Berven, 70, passed away in Sarasota, Florida on April 8, 2017. He was born in Warsaw, IN, the son of Orville John Berven and Marjorie Kreamer Berven. The family moved to Denver in the 1950s where Jeff attended Smiley Junior High. In 1961, he moved to Colorado Springs where he graduated from Wasson High School in 1964. As a high school senior, Jeff won the mile run at the State Track Meet. From 1964-1969, Jeff attended the University of Colorado at Boulder where he graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. While attending CU, he lettered in both track and cross country for three consecutive years before a tendon injury prematurely ended his college running career. While at CU, Jeff met fellow student Mary Lou Poudré whom he married in Chicago in 1970.Following graduation, Jeff went to work for Universal Oil Products (UOP) in Des Plaines, Illinois. During the next five years, Jeff traveled around the world starting up oil refineries for the Technical Services Department of UOP. During that time, Jeff worked on jobs located in Europe, South America, and the Middle East.In 1981, Jeff went to work for Koch Engineering in Wichita, KS. In the same year his twin sons, Christopher and Jeremy, were born. During the next 23 years in Wichita, Jeff served in a variety of positions in Koch Engineering and Koch Industries. He also continued his remarkable running career and was named Male Runner of the Year by the Wichita Running Club for 7 years. In 2005, Jeff accepted a position on the management team of the Flint Hills refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas. He retired from Koch in 2011 and moved to Fort Collins, Colorado to be near his family. During the winters, he resided in Sarasota, FL. Jeff was a longtime member of the Alumni C Club at the University of Colorado, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ in Wichita, KS. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Lou Poudre Berven, two sons, Jeremy of Denver, CO and Christopher of Fort Collins, CO, and three wonderful grandsons Dean (8), Grant (7), and Lee (6), as well as his brother Barry and nephew Matt of Oak Ridge, TN and niece Kate of Maine. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Community Foundation with a reference to the O. Jeffrey Berven Memorial Fund. An endowed scholarship has been set up in his name for students wishing to attend an engineering program at either the University of Colorado or Colorado State University. Funds can be directed to the Community Foundation at 2425 35th Ave, Ste 201; Greeley, CO 80634. A service will be held at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Fort Collins, CO on Friday, April 21 at 2:30 pm with internment at Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins following the service.
