DELRAY, W.Va. - Nina Virginia Dare (Thorne) Mills, 83, of Delray, WV, formerly of Rig, Keyser and Mount Storm, WV, passed over into the Lord's hands on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at her home after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born on June 23, 1933 at Durgon, WV, she was a daughter of the late Calvin R. Thorne and Nellie V. (Ketterman) Thorne Smith. She was raised by her paternal grandmother, Janie T.G. See and upon her father's death in World War II, by her aunt and uncle, Victor and Luella (Thorne) Shreve. She also was preceded in death by her former husband, Ronald B. Mills on April 15, 2016; two sisters, Dora Appold of Marietta, OH and Maxine Smith of Petersburg, WV and a brother, John Smith of Petersburg. Nina was a 1952 graduate of Petersburg High School where she played on the girl's basketball team. She loved poetry, home decorating and held a strong interest in native American culture. For many years, she worked as a practical nurse at the Dr. Love Clinic and the Dr. C.E. King Clinic in Petersburg. Later, she was employed at Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser in the admissions department. She retired from her position as medical secretary for Dr. David Chapman in Keyser. Mrs. Mills was brought up in the Church of God and the Church of the Brethren and was a member of the Methodist Church in New Lexington, OH. She also was a 50 plus year member of Carnation Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in New Lexington. Surviving are her son, Rhoderic B. Mills of Delray; a goddaughter, Cristy Pruitt and husband Roger Blaine of Atlanta, GA; two god grandsons, Evan and Nolan Pruitt, also of Atlanta; an aunt, Pauline Ketterman of Durgon; a sister, Cornelia Ours of Rough Run, WV and a brother, George Smith of Dorcas, WV. Also surviving are many dear nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as a plethora of friends. At Mrs. Mills' request, there will be no visitation. The Smith Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family with interment taking place in the North Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, near Dorcas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be directed to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation, 1577 N.E.
