Nils "Eric" Jacobsson
DALTON - Nils "Eric" Jacobsson, 70, of Dalton, passed away quietly on Friday, April 14, 2017 at home. Born in Pittsfield, April 22, 1946, the son of the late Edward G. and Dorothy L. Thompson Jacobsson, he was a longtime resident of Canaan, NY. He attended local schools in Bradenton, FL. and graduated from Chatham High School in 1964. Eric was a proud 11-year veteran of the United States Air Force including a tour in Vietnam for which he was a recipient of the Bronze Star. During his service, he served as an Air Traffic Controller and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and in 1976 was recruited by the FAA to work in the private sector. He worked at various airports including Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY, JFK in NYC and Republic Airport in Farmingdale, Long Island, NY. He later worked as a truck driver for various companies including Berkshire Armored Car. In most recent years, he has been a seasonal employee for the City of Pittsfield, Highway Department where he would run the weed harvester on the lakes, mow grass, and remove snow in the winter. It was at that time he received the nickname, Moonlighting Santa. Eric was the current Commander of the American Legion Post 155 Dalton, a member of the Dalton American Legion Riders, a member of the Dalton VFW as well as a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 65 Pittsfield, Disabled Veterans of America Chapter 15, and The Patriot Guard Riders. He was also a current board member of the Dalton Housing Authority. He leaves his wife and partner of 30 years, Susan Shufelt-Jacobsson, his daughter Kristen Harrington and her husband Thomas of Pittsfield, his two sons Eric Jacobsson II and his wife Dawn of Pittsfield, and Scott Shufelt of Portland, OR. "Farfar" leaves five grandchildren Ryan and Kasey Harrington, Cody Ramsey and Julia Jacobsson, and Noah Shufelt. His two sisters, Pamela Halldorson of Rockingham, NC and Anne(Jim) Boden survive him as do his two brothers in law Wesley "Duke" Shufelt of Canaan, NY and Jeffrey Shufelt of Pittsfield. His family also includes many nieces and nephews and his former wife, Linda Culbertson of Tempe, AZ. His extended family includes his many beloved brothers and sisters of the Dalton American Legion Riders and the Dalton American Legion. FUNERAL NOTICE: The calling hours for Nils "Eric" Jacobsson will be on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 from 4:00 PM until 6:30 PM with a service immediately following at 6:30 PM at the Dwyer Funeral Home, 776 North St., Pittsfield, MA 01201 with Rev. A. Peter Gregory officiating. Burial will be in Canaan Cemetery on Thursday April 20, 2017 with a procession leaving from the funeral home at 11:00 AM.
