NICHOLAS MAXIMILIAN von GUGGENBERG Passed away on October 12, 2016 at 100 years old. He was born in Brixen, Italy to the late Johann and Anna (von Schulheim) von Guggenberg on January 15, 1916, the fourth of seven children. He was educated at Stella Matutina Jesuit School in Austria, the Ecole Militaire St. Cyr in France, and graduated from the University of Florence, Italy, in 1938. He is survived by his sister Viscountess Christine de Forestier of Innsbruck, Austria. He emigrated to the United States on the Vulcania, the last ship to leave Italy before the U.S. participation in World War II in 1940. Thence he received his Master's degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1944. For over two decades, he worked for pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. and in Italy developing new products. Finally, he worked as a stock broker in Alexandria, VA, where he and Martha "Sissy" Butler von Guggenberg, his wife of 66 years, lived. He is survived by Sissy and his seven children, Eric, Louis "Max", Alexander, and Christopher of Alexandria, VA, Victoria Bourla of Milan, Italy, Philip of Redwood City, CA and Beatrice Kerr of Fredericksburg, VA. He was the proud grandfather of nine and great-grandfather of eight children. The family will receive friends at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Saint Rita Catholic Church, 3815 Russell Road, Alexandria, VA, where a Latin Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will follow immediately at Ivy Hill Cemetery, and a reception at St. Rita Parish Hall after. Memorial contributions may be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 2300 Fall Hill Ave., Suite 401, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. Arrangements are being made by Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, Alexandria, VA.
