O'MELIA-STINCHFIELD NIALL MAURA O'MELIA-STINCHFIELD On March 27, 2017 at Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, MD after a lengthy and courageous battle to recover from emergency open heart surgery on October 26, 2016. Niall was born April 16, 1943 in Miami Beach, FL the eldest of five children to the Honorable Richard Joseph O'Melia and Annetta Jane O'Neil. Niall, a devoted wife and loving mother, is predeceased by her parents and survived and beloved by her husband of 40 years John E. Stinchfield of Washington, DC and her children Ryan Stinchfield, of Rockville, MD and Noel Cooney (Andy) of Bethesda, MD. She is also survived by her brother Kevin O'Melia of Palm Desert, CA, and her sisters Kathleen Brugge of Arlington, TX, Maura Lynch of Potomac, MD and Deirdre Regner of Mebane, NC. Niall is survived by 11 nieces and nephews and many close and dear friends. Niall grew up in Milwaukee, WI and Bethesda, MD and lived in Bethesda and Washington, DC for over 65 years. She graduated from Little Flower Elementary School in Bethesda and from Immaculata High School in Washington, DC and Marymount College in Arlington, VA after which she studied at the Universite Paris-Sorbonne. Niall served with distinction for two years on the Hospital Ship HOPE as a bi-lingual medical secretary while the ship was stationed in Tunis, Tunisia and in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Upon returning to the United States, Niall worked as a medical secretary at Sibley Hospital in Washington, DC and then with the World Bank in Washington, DC as an administrative assistant in the Economic Development Institute for 10 years. She met and married her husband John in 1976 and raised their two children in Washington, DC. Niall was a dedicated volunteer at the Children's Inn at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD for almost 20 years. Niall and John spent their retirement years traveling the world and spending time with their many friends in Washington, DC and at their homes in Chestertown, MD and Harrisville, NH. Niall was noted for her kindness, her generosity, and her wonderful personality. Her passions were reading, needlepoint, crossword puzzles, listening to jazz and the Washington Redskins, not necessarily in that order. An avid sports fan, Niall loved watching her favorite baseball team, the Nationals, as well as, any and all soccer games and golf matches. Niall will be keenly missed not only by her devoted family but also by her many close friends. She was a longtime member of Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, MD and a parishioner of Annunciation Catholic Church in Washington, DC. The Stinchfield family wishes to acknowledge the Cardiothoracic ICU Team of Suburban Hospital in Bethesda for their dedication, expertise and skill and for the loving care they provided to Niall during her lengthy time there.
