Nellie Kate McColm 94, of Cherokee, KS died 10:50 AM, Monday, October 10, 2016 at the Medicalodge Nursing Home in Frontenac, KS of natural causes. Nellie was born April 5, 1922 in Cherokee, KS, the daughter of Harvey Elmer and Kate (Harris) Cook. Nellie was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Crawford Community High School. On March 14, 1940, Nellie married John F. McColm in Miami, OK; he preceded her in death on June 15, 1989. Nellie was a homemaker and a member of the Cherokee United Methodist Church. Nellie's life, in summary, was all about her family; she was known to put others before herself and had an optimistic, selfless attitude that everyone who knew her loved. She was also known for her quick wit and sassy sense of humor but was careful to never offend anyone. Nellie, throughout her lifetime, loved to play piano, enjoyed spending time with her family, working crossword puzzles, and listening to bluegrass and classic country music. Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Lair and husband Merle of Cherokee, KS, Susan Sweet and husband Chet of Winchester, TN and Johnna McColm of Cherokee, KS; grandchildren Marcy Newswander, Tammy Axtell, John Lair, Karen Newport and Matt Sweet and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings, one great-grandson, and her oldest daughter, Linda Creitz. Graveside Memorial Services will be 10:30 AM Monday, October 17, 2016 at the Cherokee Cemetery in Cherokee, KS with Pastor Don Wymore officiating. Family will receive friends from 6-7:00 PM Sunday, October 16, 2016 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family asks expressions of sympathy to be in the form of memorials to the Lord's Diner in Pittsburg, KS.
