Ms. Nancy Barrett
On the morning of Wednesday, January 11, 2017, Ms. Nancy Barrett, born Nancy Carol Harrill, joined her loved ones in the afterlife. A beloved mother, grandmother and care giver, Nancy fought bravely before succumbing to a short illness. She was 83. Ms. Barrett's early life was marked by academic achievement and travel. A Fulbright scholar at University of North Carolina, Nancy graduated, cum laude, earning both bachelors and master's degrees. After traveling extensively in Europe, she pursued a career with the state department teaching languages in Bolivia. There she met a dashing young captain named Paul who was to be her future husband and father of her only son. In later years, Ms. Barrett, a Salisbury, N.C., native, spent many years teaching Spanish at Georgia Southern College in Statesboro, Ga. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she retired as an associate professor to attend the needs of her mother. Nancy, "Nana" to her grandchildren, goes to join her parents, brothers and sisters, who have preceded her: father, Paul A. Harrill; mother, Myrtle Harrill; brother, Paul A. Harrill Jr.; and sisters, Mildred Loflin and Reba Shackleford. Survivors include one son, John W. Barrett; his wife, Jessica; four grandchildren, Nickolas, John Alex, Victoria and Aaron; and her sister-in-law, Mary Ruth Harrell. A graveside service at Rowan Memorial Park Chapel in the Pines will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at 11 a.m., officiated by the Rev. Jim Vickrey. Memorials in her name may be made to the March of Dimes and the ASPCA. Lyerly Funeral Home is serving the Barrett family. Online condolences may be made at www.lyerlyfuneralhome.com.
