Mortin B. Schierhorn
Mortin Benjamin Schierhorn, "Mort," passed away on Feb. 11, 2017, after an extended illness. Mort was born on June 28, 1931, in Franklin Park, Ill., to Benjamin and Martha Schierhorn. He grew up working on the family vegetable farm on the outskirts of Chicago, Ill. During this time, Mort learned the value of hard work, discipline and perseverance that would serve him throughout his life. Following high school, Mort attended Iowa State University on a football and ROTC scholarship. He was also a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Mort graduated in 1953, with a civil engineering degree. In April 1954, he married his college sweetheart, Sarah Ann Smith, whom he met on a blind date. They were happily married for nearly 63 years. In 1956, Mort and Sarah began their Alaska adventure by driving up the Alcan Highway to Fairbanks, where Mort served as the project engineer/area manager for Green Construction Company through 1980. During this time, Mort traveled the State managing a variety of road and construction projects. He was also an active member of the Fairbanks community, and served on several community boards including the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, the Municipal Utility System and the Fairbanks Goldpanners. On summer weekends, Mort spent time at the family cabin on Birch Lake. Mort and his good friend, Ron Nerland, always had a project going: whether it was a new dock, a deck or a bunkhouse, they were always having fun! In 1980, Mort and Sarah moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where Mort finished his career as the construction manager of M.B. Contracting. He also served on the AGC executive board. Following his retirement, Mort enthusiastically embraced the next phase of his life as grandfather and handyman - willingly doing any task that his friends, family or church needed. He was a long- time member of All Saints' Episcopal Church, where he served for many years on the vestry and lovingly tended the church grounds with Sarah by his side. Mort was an enthusiastic supporter of his three grandsons: Chris, Brad and Eric. He and Sarah attended countless baseball and hockey games, both inside and outside the state. There was never a doubt where Mort was in the crowd, as his distinct voice was heard cheering on his grandsons and their teams, and his joy and enthusiasm were contagious. Even when his failing health prevented him from attending games in person, he never missed watching his grandsons' games online or on TV. Mort was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Ervin and Shirley. He is survived by his wife, Sarah; his son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Nancy; and his grandsons, Chris, Brad and Eric. The family wishes to thank all the professionals and friends that helped care for Mort over the last year. In particular, the family is deeply thankful for the care of Dr. Julie McCormick, Dr. John Clark, and Lorna Mills and her associates with CareNet. A memorial service will be held at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 545 West 8th Avenue in Anchorage, on Feb. 24, 2017, at 3 p.m., followed by a reception at The Hotel Captain Cook (Quarterdeck) in Anchorage from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church.
