Mildred Kipp Powers Salisbury-Mildred Kipp Powers, 95, of Salisbury, died on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Born on February 18, 1921 in Weehawken, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Hiram and Irene Schem Kipp. At the age of 21, Mildred joined the Army Nurse Corps as an Army Nurse Captain. She served during World War II, caring for wounded soldiers in California, England, France and at the end of the war in the Philippines. After the War, she continued her service as a nurse on various transport ships, returning displaced refugees back to their native country. This is where she met her future husband and love of her life, Captain Bernard V. Powers. After the death of her husband in the early 1960's, she worked as a visiting nurse and later became a nurse at Hackensack High School in New Jersey. She moved to Salisbury in 2002, residing at Mallard Landing. During her time here, she was active in The Samuel Chase Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She also enjoyed sharing her story about her service during WWII with local schools. Her hobbies included reading, playing cards with her friends at Mallard Landing and spending time with her family. Mildred is survived by a son, Kip V. Powers and his wife Sharon of Fruitland; a daughter, Gail Borgman and her husband Dean of Rockport, MA; nine grandchildren, John Borgman, Debbie Gantt, Matthew Borgman, Christen Yates, Luke McGarr, Noah McGarr, Kim Hatton, Kelly Jones, Krista Bafford; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Anne Brooks of Cortland, NY and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mildred is preceded in death by her husband, Bernard V. Powers; a daughter, Leah McGarr and a sister, Irene Thomas. A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Holloway Funeral Home, Salisbury. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private in George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Maryland Food Bank-Eastern Shore, 28500 Owens Branch Rd, Salisbury, MD 21801 or Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802.
