In memory of
Michael McDonough
After a courageous battle with cancer, Michael passed away on October 8, 2016 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, surrounded by family. Michael was born on February 7, 1959 in Hollywood, California to Darlene McDonough and the late William McDonough. Michael was raised in Santa Barbara, California and graduated from San Marcos High School in 1977. In 1975, Michael began his long and distinguished career in the grocery business when he started working at Vons. Thanks to his tenacity and work ethic, Michael was ultimately promoted to store manager in 1990. During his forty-three year tenure with the company, Michael had a great deal of accomplishments, including multiple Store Manager of the Year awards. For Michael, his most significant accomplishment was remaining with the company longer than his father, William McDonough, who also worked as a store manager. Most importantly, Michael served as a strong leader, trusted mentor, and close friend to those he worked with. Above all else, Michael was a loving and devoted father, son and brother. He worked hard to support his family, but somehow always found the time to attend every football game, basketball tournament, graduation, and every other important milestone. Michael was generous not only with his time, but also with his pride and encouragement of his children, and he did everything he could to ensure they had the best education and happiest life possible. Michael's favorite place was Lake Tahoe, and he particularly loved the beauty and serenity of Emerald Bay. Some of Michael's happiest memories were of taking the kids out on the lake in his boat and whirling them around on the inner tube, sometimes faster than their mothers were comfortable with. He was an avid dog lover and always seemed most at ease with a dog in his lap. Michael also loved to joke around, and his mischievous grin and playful sense of humor would lighten every room he entered. Michael is survived by his son, Kyle McDonough, his daughter, Megan McDonough, his mother, Darlene McDonough, his two sisters, Kathy Cummings (Gary) and Lisa McDonough-Araujo (Carlos), and several of his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, William McDonough. Dad, we love you and will miss you always. Thank you for everything you have taught us. The funeral service for Michael will be held at San Roque Catholic Church, 3200 Calle Cedro, Santa Barbara, California on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Services at the burial site will immediate follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation at 1100 Industrial Road #1, San Carlos, California, 94070, or online at https://www.supportalcf.org/MikeMcDonough ... Show More
