Michael Edward Lawler
Lawler, Michael Edward 80 Oct. 08, 1936 Jan. 03, 2017 Michael Edward Lawler, life-long Portland area resident passed away on Jan. 3, 2017 at Providence Milwaukie Hospital with family by his side. He was 80 years old. Mike was born in Portland, and was the only child of Eddie and Patricia (Paxton) Lawler. He attended Catholic school during his primary education, but ultimately graduated from Franklin High School in 1955. During his time at Franklin, he was a football star and in his senior year was voted "2nd team, All City" as a Full Back. He was also a member of the track team. After high school, Mike played football for one year at the University of Idaho before leaving to continue his education at the University of Oregon, where he joined the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He graduated in 1960. While at the U of O, he met Chary Weber (a Pi Phi) who lived directly across the street. Shortly after graduation, they were married in the bride's home town of Baker, Ore. The couple had three children, Dennis, Brad, and Amy. Much of Mike's professional career was spent in the wood products business, first as a salesman for the Welch Paneling Company, and later as a partner in Herrin Products (a manufacturer of pre-finished paneling). In connection with his work, he traveled all over the world and spent a good deal of time in both Japan and Korea. Later in his life, he met and married Zeta Gregg in 1981. The couple had no children, and lived on Lake Oswego. They spent much of their time together traveling, playing golf, and skiing. Mike was an excellent skier and loved the sport most of his life. His favorite place to ski was in Sun Valley, Idaho. He was also a life-long handball player and was a member of the Multnomah Athletic Club for 50 years. He also enjoyed playing golf, and had one of the craziest looking golf swings in history. Mike is survived by his three children; several grandchildren, and a sister and brother from his mother's second marriage. A memorial and celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at Kells Irish Pub 112 SW Second Avenue, Portland, OR 97204. All of his friends and family are invited to attend.
