In memory of
Mervyn Earl "Merv" KRAUSE
KRAUSE, Mervyn Earl Mervyn Earl Krause (Merv) of Pflugerville, Texas passed away on Wednesday, October 12th, 2016 at the age of 87. Merv was born in Longpoint, Texas on June 6, 1929 and was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church on August 4, 1929. He was confirmed at St. Martin's Lutheran Church on April 2, 1944. Merv was preceded in death by his wife Pat, his parents Walter and Mollie Krause, his sister Jeanette Erlene Krause and his grandson Eric Krause. Merv and Pat both grew up in the Hyde Park area of Austin and met when they were kids. They both graduated from Austin High School and spent some time together at Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas. They were married on June 15th, 1950 and became charter members of Faith Lutheran Church. Merv spent 10 years working for the Right-of-Way Division of the Texas Highway Department. After his time with the State he became a realtor selling residential homes and also ran a branch office for the Austin American Statesman part-time. Merv's only real hobby was his interest in fast-pitch softball, and he became well known in Austin and across the state for his ability to play third base and hit. Over the years his teams won many tournaments at all levels and one year were part of one of the longest games ever played in fast-pitch history lasting 28 innings, the equivalent of four full games. His teams earned the right to play in three World Fast-Pitch Softball tournaments during his playing career. After he and most other members of his age group stopped playing, Merv formed and managed several teams made up of his sons, nephews and the sons of his former teammates for many years. In 1993 Merv was inducted into the Austin Softball Hall of Fame. He made friends in the softball community wherever he went and cherished the memories and friendships he accumulated along the way. Merv is survived by his sister Marilyn Kaase of Austin, son Rick and wife Karen of Austin, daughter Sherrie Palan and husband Bob of La Vernia, son Terry and wife Marcie of Pflugerville, son Kevin and wife Debbie of Pflugerville and son Gary and wife Diane of Elgin. He was Paw Paw to 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren with one more on the way. The family would like to thank the administration and staff at Pflugerville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and the nurses and staff of Hospice Austin for their care for Merv during his final months. A celebration of Merv's life will be held at the Cook-Walden Capital Parks Chapel in Pflugerville on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 3:30pm. In lieu of flowers the family would like to request that donations in Merv's name be made to Hospice Austin, Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Elgin, or a charity of your choice.
