In memory of
Merton "Mert" Jacobson
Merton "Mert" S. Jacobson, 80, once of Spring Valley, died Jan. 31, 2017, after a courageous yearlong battle with cancer. He was born May 1, 1936, in Spring Valley to Herman and Mae Jacobson. He graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1954 and served in the Air Force from 1954 to 1958, which included time in Okinawa, Japan. He worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester in the early part of his career, but spent most of his working years in the real estate industry. After his retirement, he continued to be in service of others through his work with RollX Vans and serving many roles with his church, including the Stephen Ministries. His real passion was realized later in his life when he was able to spend the winter months in Alamo, Texas, where he met new friends and participated in many activities. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Miriam; three children, Jeff Jacobson and Scott Jacobson, both of Rochester, and Kristine Sawyer, of Stewartville; three stepchildren, David (Candace) Vander Plas, of Templeton, Calif., Barbara (Rick) Weatherly, of Rochester, and Mary Ann (John Jr.) Corcoran, of Madison, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Lorraine Hildestad, of Austin, Eldena Seabright, of Spring Valley, and Maryanne (Don) Befort, of Lake City. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two brothers-in-law. A celebration of life service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 1, at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Bloomington, Minn., with a private burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
