Merle Goedken 89, of Longmont Colorado, died peacefully at the Tru Community Care Hospice center in Boulder Colorado on January 11, 2017. Merle was born on August 9, 1927 in Adrian, Minnesota to Edmund Goedken and Susan Schutz. Merle honorably served in the United States Army in 1946 and 1947 as a medic. Merle married Lorayne Fiegen on August 12, 1952 in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. After 44 years of marriage, Lorayne preceded Merle in death in 1996. Merle loved farming, it was his life passion. Merle managed several farms until 2007. Merle spent thirty years helping others through estate planning and insurance sales at Prudential. He spent over 12,000 hours volunteering in the community through the Our Center. He was also an active member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, The Elks and Moose Lodge. Over the last decade, Merle enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, working on puzzles and reading. Merle is survived by his daughters Diane Hill of Longmont, CO, and Donna (Paul) Gartenmann of Longmont, CO; grandchildren, Chris Gartenmann (Jamie), Matt Gartenmann (Meca Delgado) and Dave Hill; great grandchild Cielo Gartennmann and his special friend Vi Tollefson of Madison, South Dakota. Merle was preceded in death by his wife Lorayne, his brother Leander and son-in-law Jim Hill. A Visitation will be held from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Friday, January 13, 2017 at Carroll-Lewellen Funeral Home Chapel, 503 Terry St., Longmont, CO. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, January 14, 2017 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 3791 Pike Rd., Longmont, CO. Interment will follow at Foothills Garden of Memory, Longmont, CO. Military Honors will be presented by The American Legion Post #32 of Longmont. In Lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to The Our Center of Longmont, 220 Collyer St., Longmont, CO 80501. Carroll-Lewellen Funeral & Cremation Services is entrusted with arrangements.
