Mercedes Elaine (King) Laplante
Mercedes Elaine (King) Laplante, 92, of Ellington, loving wife of over 43 years to Robert W. Laplante, passed away Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016, at Evergreen Healthcare in Stafford Springs. Born in Franklin, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Lester and Mildred King, she grew up and lived in Franklin and Florida before moving to Ellington 26 years ago. Prior to her retirement, Mercedes was a security officer for an investigative agency and several different stores for many years. She was a member of the Ellington Ward, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was a survivor of the Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire of 1942. Mercedes was an opera singer prior to that fire. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Susan Smith, of Vernon; four grandchildren, Heather, Stephanie, Clifton W. III, and Heather; and a great-grandson, Troy. She was predeceased by two sons, Clifton Wentworth Smith II and Robert Oliver Smith Jr. A memorial service will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2 Maple St., Ellington. Interment will be private and at the convenience of her family.
