Maureen O'Mahony Brown, born January 28, 1923 passed away January 24, 2017. Maura, as she was known to her friends, was born in Wales, but moved to Coventry, England with her mother and four brothers after her father's death. She attended art school and later in life became a very talented and prolific painter. During WWII, she fell in love and married Maurice Brown, a member of the US Navy. They left England for Puerto Rico, then Chicago, and finally settled in Colonial Beach, Virginia. There she raised three girls, Sheelagh, Rosie, and Maire. She worked several different jobs through the years, but being an avid reader herself, loved her job working at the local library most. After retirement, she remained active with church, swimming, painting, gardening, and her favorite activity – shopping. She spent the last year in Charlottesville where she died at home with family at her side. She is loved and survived by her daughters, Sheelagh Oliveria and Maire Mahanes with her husband, Forrest Workman; grandchildren, Sonja and her husband, Jeff Creel, Ryan and his wife, Kelly Mahanes, Wyatt Mahanes, Ike Workman, and Emmy Workman; and her great-grandchildren, Violette Creel and Rhys Mahanes. Maura was a warm, caring, and wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. We miss you. A memorial service will be conducted 11:30 a.m., Saturday, February 25, 2017 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 401 Alderman Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Hospice of the Piedmont. Condolences may be shared at www.kygers.com.
