Maude Williams-Buchanan, 97, passed away Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016. Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Collier-Butler Chapel. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. The Rev. Gary Buchanan will officiate. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery. Mrs. Buchanan was the youngest of six children, lived during the Great Depression and was raised to be very conservative. She graduated from Etowah High School in 1938, where she was a cheerleader for the Etowah Blue Devil Football team. After graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C., worked at "The Hott Shoppe" where she met the love of her life and future husband, J.W. Buchanan. Mrs. Buchanan was a faithful member of Fairview Baptist Church for many years, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and was a member of W.M.U. One of her favorite things to do before her health began to fail was traveling to many different states, including Hawaii, and to Mexico with the Etowah Baptist Association "Builders for Christ." She was happiest working with a hammer or paintbrush rather than in the kitchen. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, J.W. "Buck" Buchanan, and son, Cecil Bennett Buchanan. Mrs. Buchanan lived a long and productive life serving God and serving others. She loved her family and will be greatly missed, but we know she is in heaven with her family. She leaves to cherish her memory, sons Wesley and Ervin (Pat), Gadsden; daughter, Linda (Dale) Atkins, Montrose, Colorado; grandchildren, Gary (Barbara) Buchanan, Tallassee, Steve (Kelly) Buchanan, Gadsden, Leslie (Neil) Clemons, Hokes Bluff, Brooke Buchanan West Point; great grandchildren, Lauren, Brett, Rylee, Abbey and Avery Buchanan, Taylor and Tylynn Register and Brycen Johns. Pallbearers will be sons, grandsons and great-grandsons. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fairview Cemetery Fund. Thanks to Amedisys Hospice of Gadsden for their care and Ronnie Holmes for his visits. Special thanks to Barbara Kilgore for the wonderful care she gave our mother for seven years, and to Leslie for the love and care she gave for the past year.
