Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Vanable Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Vanable, was born on May 10, 1965 and died on Saturday, October 15, 2016. Betsy was a kind, passionate, and loving woman who fought bravely in her life-long struggle with mental illness. Betsy graduated from Harrison High School in 1985, attended Stephens College, and graduated from Purdue University with a BA in Communications. Growing up, Betsy enjoyed horseback riding and participated in dressage with her beloved chestnut Arabian Ma Belle Amie. Following college, Betsy lived and worked in the Chicago area and later moved to Las Gatos, California where she worked as an administrative assistant and event coordinator. After returning to live in Lafayette, Betsy committed herself to a variety of volunteer activities, including work with the St. John's/LUM Food Pantry, reading programs for area elementary school children, and in work with Therapy Dogs International, where she shared her love for animals with both children and adults during their times of need. She was also a much admired source of support and an organizational leader in area Twelve-Step Programs. Betsy is survived by her loving parents, Jane and Joseph Vanable, her devoted brother Peter and his wife Anne, and their two sons, Joseph and Timothy Vanable, all of Syracuse, New York. She will be remembered for her ability to help others, her warm friendships, her strong devotion to her family, and her intense engagement with life. A celebration of Betsy's life will be held on Saturday, November 12, at 11 AM, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 6th and Ferry. All are welcome to attend a reception after the service.
