Mary Elizabeth West 1923 - 2016 Mary Elizabeth (Betty) West died Friday, September 23, 2016 in Springfield. Betty was born on April 9, 1923 in Boston, MA. She graduated from Dorchester High School for Girls in 1940 and Simmons College in 1944. Betty worked at the Boston Public Library in the Children's Department until 1956, when she moved to Springfield, IL to become head of the Children's Department at Lincoln Library. During this time, she served on the Newberry Award selection committee. Subsequently, she became Library Services Coordinator for School District 186. In 1968 she received an M.A. in Education from Millikin University in Decatur, IL. She retired in 1989 and spent the rest of her life traveling, hiking, cross-country skiing, reading, knitting, and tutoring at the Washington Street Mission. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mildred Chute of Boston; and two brothers, Capt. Charles L. "Chuck" Chute of Fort Myers, FL and Donald R. Chute of Norwood, MA. She is survived by her son, Denton H. West of Sedalia, CO (wife Karen); granddaughter, Katherine R. McGuire, M.D. of Omaha, NE (husband Luke); great-granddaughters, Abigail, Natalie, Andrea and Charlotte McGuire; as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at Boardman-Smith Funeral Home, 800 South Grand Ave. West, Springfield.
